This is a big deal for the City of Corpus Christi. The City could be the first to bring wireless fidelity (WiFi) to an entire city, and they have included Downtown in their pilot program. The City could be used as an example and a success story for other cities to emulate. The City has positioned itself for new growth and as a leader in technology through WiFi. This is exciting!

Take Downtown for instance. By including Downtown in its pilot program, the City facilitates access to broadband internet services for Downtown. Being wireless Downtown means that anyone with a laptop, PDA or other similar device can sit in a park, coffee shop, restaurant, hotel room, office or even on their boat - docked or out to sea a few miles, and communitcate with others or conduct Internet searches.

Although the WiFi infrastructure was originated to enable the City to take instant readings from utility meters, lthe initiative is evolving to a much grander level. Since we are treading on virgin ground, we are beginning with a blank sheet of paper if you will, bounded only by creativity and ingenuity.

The DMD has assigned a committee to work with the City and others as a "think tank" to help research and imagine the possibilities.
